ResLife Awards

The Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary, and the Office of Residence Life would like to give you the opportunity to nominate your fellow on-campus students for the 2010-2011 Residence Life Awards. These awards are intended to recognize students for their contributions to the betterment of the Residence Life community and the community of Southeast Missouri State University. 

To be eligible for all awards, the nominee must reside in a residence hall, or be employed by the Office of Residence Life at Southeast Missouri State University.  Please submit a detailed letter of nomination for each award to [email protected] by April 20th, 2011.

Residence Hall of the Year Award Criteria:


1.      RHA Representatives
Obtain letter from RHA Secretary stating hall representatives have at least 85% attendance to RHA Meetings.
Convey how representatives have given reports both to and from RHA.

2.      Hall Council
Must have held regularly scheduled meetings. Provide documentation.
Present at least one program a month. Provide documentation.
Display sound fiscal policy. Include copy of budget summary with up-to-date spending.
Include copy of Constitution.

3.      Resident Assistants
RAs must be on track to meeting point expectations. Include current summary.
Residents should have responded positively to RA. Include Fall 2010 survey summary.
RAs should have given regular programming. Include summary/documentation.

4.      Hall Director
Hall Director must hold regular office hours. Include documentation.
Hall Director should attend RA and hall council programs. Include summary/documentation
Hall Director should have received positive feedback from residents. Include Fall 2010 survey summary.

5.      General/Community
Hall should have presented programs benefitting Cape Girardeau and/or SEMO.
Hall should have residents involved in a variety of on-campus organizations. Include summary.
 

First-Year Student of the Year Award Criteria:
  • Students must be of first year status and must live on campus in a residence hall.
  • The students will be nominated by someone within a residence hall, Residence Hall Association, or the Office of Residence Life
  • The nominated person must prove that they are in good academic and judicial standing with Southeast Missouri State University
  • The nominated person cannot transfer to another institution within the academic year of the award being received. If nominated person plans or does actually transfer to another institution then they must forfeit award and title.
  • Must be a full time student
  • The nominated person has to turn in a letter of recommendation from the person who nominated them.
  • The person nominated has to be able to answer the following questions:
    • How are you involved with the residence halls?
    • What have you achieved to better the residence hall?
    • Why do you think you should receive this award?
    • What is your community involvement?
    • How have you helped to better campus as a first year student?
  • The nominated person cannot win another residence life award individually.

Hall Council of the Year Award Criteria:


*Follow all laws of their constitution (if constitution does not exist, then the bylaws of RHA)

1.      Active in their building:

Put on a wide variety of programs (educational, social, etc.)

Went above and beyond some way (i.e did community service, fundraised, etc.)

Decent attendance during most programs

Dealt with hall issues if there was any

Consistent attendance of members

Strong executive board leadership

2.      Active in RHA:

Turned in hall reports consistently

RHA reps had strong attendance/ participation at RHA meetings

Please include collaboration with other HC or campus organizations


Hall Council Member of the Year Award Criteria:

·         Strong attendance at HC meetings

·         Strong attendance at HC events

·         Maintains a positive attitude about HC

·         Contributed time, ideas, leadership(not necessarily an eec board mmbr) in HC

·         Volunteerd and followed through to help with HC events

·         Abided by the HC constitution to the best of their knowledge

·         GPA at least 2.65

·         Good judicial/academic standing with the university (should not be an ra)

*Letter of recommendation w/evidence to the above criteria

Program of the Year Award Criteria:

·         Program must be targeting and take place in residence halls

·         Program must have had high attendance (relative to hall)

·         Program should be adaptable to other halls

·         Program showed uniqueness in conception, advertising, or presentation

·         Program must be student/RA/hall council produced

·         Program should be well received by residents

·         Students should benefit from program either in community development, community service or educational ways

**Any program held by an outside organization IN or specifically for the residence halls is also eligible.

Hall Director of the Year Award Criteria:
  • Are actively involved in campus organizations outside of Residence life,
  • Participates in the community development of Cape Girardeau,
  • Supports the university’s sports, fine arts and/or academic programs,
  • Knows a good proportion of the students who live within that residence hall,
  • Actively plans programs and/or encourages hall council and R.A.’s to plan programs to develop the resident hall students leadership abilities, scholastic achievement and personal growth,
  • Actively supports and encourages the professional development of residents and staff

Resident Assistant of the Year Award Criteria:

  • Enthusiastic about their position.
  • Appreciates diversity.
  • Shows genuine interest in their job and floor.
  • Open to suggestions of residents.
  • Active throughout the campus.
  • Builds a community that knows and supports each other.
  • Holds their residents to the policies and standards of Residence Life.
  • Quality programming that meets the needs of the residents.
  • Contributes to the cohesion of the staff in an active and supportive manner.
  • Promotes academic success of residents.
 

Residence Hall Student of the Year Award Criteria:
  1. In order to receive this award a student must be in good judicial standing.
  2. The Residence Hall student of the year shows a commitment to their academics in having a minimum GPA of 2.75.
  3. The Residence Hall Student of the year shows a commitment to community. They work to actively build and create community in the residence halls. Most specifically, the student is well known and liked throughout the Residence Hall where they are nominated.
  4. The Residence Hall Student of the Year shows a commitment to Southeast. The student is involved in activities outside of the residence halls that help to enrich their time and diversify their experiences while on the college campus.
  5. The Residence Hall student of Year must show a commitment to life in the residence halls. Nominees for this award must participate in the following ways:
·         Attends hall council events
·         Helps to plan hall council events
·         Is an active participant in Hall council
·         Holds a hall council executive position
·         Attends hall council meetings
·         Attend RHA meetings
·         Attends RHA events
·         Attends programs hosted by RA’s
·         Actively participates in their floor community
PLEASE NOTE: Resident Assistants and Executive Board members of NRHH and RHA will not be eligible to win this award.

National Residence Hall Honorary

Commitment to Scholastics Award Criteria:

This student must demonstrate academic excellence and scholarship. The candidate must possess at least a 3.5 grade point average, and be in organization that recognizes academic excellence.  This includes, but is not limited to, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi. The candidate demonstrates an overall commitment to scholastics, and serves as an exemplary student.

Commitment to Service Award Criteria:

This student must show a supreme dedication to civic engagement in an ever changing world.  The candidate must exceptional record of service in the campus and Cape Girardeau community.  Additionally, the candidate must participate in service projects outside of Residence Hall Association and National Residence Hall Honorary.  Overall, the student must be a leader in the betterment of campus and community through service.

Commitment to Recognition Award Criteria:

This student must demonstrate an overall positive attitude, and display a variety of informal and formal recognition tactics.   This tactics include, but are not limited to, the submission of OTMs, nominations for the Residence Life Awards, and recognition as simple as congratulating others for a job well done.  Overall, the candidate must show an outstanding attitude toward recognition, and recognize its importance in everyday life.

Commitment to Leadership Award Criteria:

This student must possess exemplary leadership skills.  The candidate should be actively involved and committed to multiple organizations across campus, and serve in a variety of leadership roles.  Additionally, the candidate must have a strong desire to be a leader and a role model, and constantly strive to be the best that they are able to be.

Shelia E. Pinckney Award Commitment to NRHH Award:

This student must be an inducted member of the Shelia E. Pinckney Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). The member should demonstrate the importance of all four pillars, and exceeds the membership requirements listed in the constitution of the organization.  Additionally, the member should be actively committed to the success of the organization. Finally, the candidate cannot hold a position on the executive board, regional board of directors, or national board of directors for NRHH.
